What follows is a complete list of Newbery Medal winning books and Newbery Honor books from the year of the medal’s inception, 1922, to the present day. I’ve long had the desire to read all the books on this list. As you’ll see, I have a long way to go to become a real Newbery completist but I’m making progress.
My life has undergone many changes since I started dreaming this goal into existence. It started around 1995. That’s when I created the first version of this Literature For Kids website. That site lasted only a few years. I can’t remember why I removed it from the web.
Later I went through a tumultuous relationship that seriously hindered my ability to read books from the Newbery Medal list. This controlling man actively tried to keep me from reading children’s books and wanted me to change my writing genres from middle grade and YA to fantasy and sci-fi, which he thought were more popular. That seemed so crazy to me because juvenile literature is natural for my type of writing. Plus, who wants to be pushed around by a control freak who intrudes on such a deeply personal aspect of life?
During the seven years of that relationship many of the books on this list were in my possession but I hid them so as not to irritate the man who thought I should not read them. And at the end of the relationship I was so desperate to leave him I gave away almost all the books in my possession, even many I had not read. Hard times! The silver lining to this dark cloud in my life is that after moving north 700 miles I suddenly found Jesus and became a Christian! Life has been getting gradually better since then. To God be the glory!!
I started over on my Newbery completist quest a few years ago. I’ve already reviewed some of the books but most of those reviews were written on one of the former versions of this site, or on a third party site. I need to gather them here on this blog. It will take time. The project seems massive but this is my hobby, something I love to think about and do. Little by little this blog will expand and a lot of it will be centered around this list of books.
I will not focus only on this list, however. I have a dedication to exploring all of juvenile literature and my articles will draw on many sources. I want to present the work of indie and small press authors, as well as books like these with better known publishers. If you have a book you want me to review, let me know in a comment.
A note on my numbering system. You will see a number after each title. I am the only one using this numbering system so you can ignore it. I numbered the books starting in 1922 when the award started. I use this for fun activities like using a random number generator to choose what book I read next and keeping track of how many books I’ve read.
Without further explanation, here’s my list of the Newbery Medal winning books and Newbery Honor books. I’ve personalized this list to record what I’ve already read. Feel free to copy and paste this list into your own blog and please share a link to your Newbery page in the comments so I can visit to see what you’re doing with it.

Barbara Radisavljevic says
We’ve read a lot of the same ones. I’m anxious to see your reviews on some of the ones I also reviewed on my site. I started a similar projects of reading the books from this list. I haven’t read many of the recent ones, but I did discover some now favorite authors I hadn’t read and was happy to see some of my favorite books were on the list. Many that I read because they were on that list disappointed me.

I’d love to see your list, Barbara… you’re welcome to take the list to your site to keep track of which ones you’ve read, if you’d like. I would like to read your reviews and will go look for them on your book site.
